Intro to Mold-Making for Slip Casting
from $600.00

This series of private lessons will introduce you to basic mold making techniques for slip casting. This is a course geared towards teaching you the process, not creating a mold of a specific work geared towards a production process. The piece you would like to cast must be approved, and if complex, may require additional lessons beyond those outlined below at an additional cost. Based on a review of the item the student wishes to cast, our instructor will make a custom plan for your series of classes. If additional lessons may be necessary, we will alert you in advance. The best pieces to cast are small (under 6 inches in each dimension) and leather-hard greenware (unfired work). The piece will likely be destroyed in the casting process.

The package includes 3 sessions (see outline below) though some items may require additional lessons depending on their complexity, which will be an additional cost.

Lesson 1: 1 hour
• Explain terminology, process start to finish.
• Discuss how and why molds are made in specific ways.
• Discuss process step-by-step for your item and possible issues.
• Cover how to measure volume and how to mix plaster.

Lesson 2: 2.5 hours
• Begin making mold. (Pour 1-2 parts depending on complexity and size.)
• While plaster is setting, use an existing mold to make a cast.

Lesson 3: 2.5 hours
• Complete final 1-2 parts of mold and clean up.
• Clean up the cast from the previous class.

1 person: $600
2 people: $825

Plaster privates are restricted to 2 people maximum, and both people must work on the same mold together. If lessons are taken with 2 people, every session must be done jointly on the same date.

Lessons 2 and 3 must be at least 1 week apart (to allow for dry time).
